Week 6.

The final stage of this paper. Today was all about fine tuning and printing. Checking spelling and text adding things to create the finished look. I love how is has turned out and the professional print makes the brochure look amazing.

Rationale:
I decided to do my brochure on fishing in Wellington as I wanted to do something active and different. Each location has a different energy connected to it calming, energetic and exciting. I wanted to convey the fact that it is just the fisherman, the different location and the large amount of fish there is to catch. Fishing is a simple and calming activity where you can relax wherever you are doing it. This is the reason I kept my illustration simple and not to busy. Some of my images I sourced from the internet and I turned them into vector shapes like the fish, icons and people. I used a 5 by 6 grid that kept the lay out easily readable. The titles are yellow to contract with the blues throughout my brochure. I found it hard to do the online blog as I feel better working in a physical book. I feel that I created a good concept for my illustration early on which held be back from making huge developments compared to other people that started with weaker designs and went though the development process a lot more. When printing I chose recycled paper as I like the texture and the ‘natural’ link it had to my activity. The cover is printed on 250gsm and the inner is on 160gsm, which I feel gives a good body but isn't to thick.

Illustration – Calm and relaxing activity, that is enjoyable for both adults and children. The set of triple lines represent the intensive of the destination. I chose a dull light blue to enhance the emotion of calmness and easy going.

Illustration – Active and exciting. The silhouette is a mid action pose create energy within the spread. The triple lines show and medium level of intensity compared to the other to. For the circle colour I wanted something a bit more vibrant that also blended into the background. I feel this colour goes great with my over all look as it isn't to bright and stays within my colour plate but at the same time makes the man pop out.

Illustration – Active and ongoing. With the textured water I created an exciting shape that wraps around the imahe of the boat, showing that your out on the water. The triple lines convey a high level of intensity because your out on the water catch fishing in uncontrollable weather. Also there is a higher chance of catching fish as you are always at the best spots.

Extra page – I didn't want to much imagery as there is lots of writing on this page. This page engages with the audience and it something they can use more than once.

Week 5.

From my early three spreads to my latest developed ones. I have changed a lot of the text through out the brochure mainly the reason for this is the first one was only had place holder text were the second image has the real text.
Also I have added the finalised icons into the pages, even though I had space for were I thought I was going to place them some of it change a bit. I wanted to aline the icons with the type to create a nice follow making it easy for the viewers eye to follow.

Images from top to bottom: Cover front/back, Intro and map, Spare spread.
I have talked about the cover in another post here is the back joined to it. I didn't want a boring back cover I felt carrying on the silhouette would create a nice ending to the brochure. Aligning the front and the back texts gives a nice finalised finish. From my into and map I just wanted to keep it simple using the same texture styled like I have with my other illustrations. For my last spread and spare one I wanted lots of different information that engages the viewer.

Week 5.

Here I have been working on a front cover. In order it goes from the first idea (which were more place holders than design) to the last one which is my final cover. I wanted my cover to speak to the contents but also have a different element that creates an eye catching and interesting brochure that makes you want to pick it up.

I have been using silhouettes through out my brochure and wanted that element to come through on the cover. The photo is one I took just out of the wellington harbour when the sun was setting I have enhanced the colouring in it though. I didn't want the title to be generic like the first covers. I like 'Fish Me' because it is a play on 'Pick Me'.

Week 5.

Here I was looking at what icon design I like. I had already decided I wanted to talk about the money to doing each fishing location, the amount of people that are around and the equipment you need to take.
I chose the dark blue squares. I feel that they are the easiest to read and although the viewer with notice them I didn't want them to be the first think they looked at. Having something like the golden fish icon might draw the view away the the text and not fit in the grid nicely. I reckon the negative icons using the white looks a more professional than the black on colour. Also because my brochure uses lots of negative space it suits best.

Week 4.

Brochures:

The images to the left is the first attempt at a brochure design I really like how the negative space is working but I do not like the size of the columns.
The images to the right my second attempt, I like the writing in this one a lot more as the lines are longer, though  I have already decide I do not want to use that imagery but testing another style helped me decide I the text better.
The cover is just a place holder at the moment as it isn't enticing and you wouldn't want to pick it up if it were among others.

Week 4.

Carrying on from my first designs I have developed them. I feel I had I good illustration to start with and all I need to do was fine tune it.
I wanted to add a bit of colour to make it strong and engage the audience. I struggled with the charter illustration as the first boat was just getting lost amongst all the other imaginary, I still haven't decided which one I prefer but I feel they are both better than the last one, changing the silhouette of the boat and adding people fishing from it.

After talking to the tutors they recommended trying sunrises/sunsets instead of the coloured circles. I feel this my be to much but will try it. Now I need to start think about the layout of the brochure and the front cover.

Week 4.

Even though I felt theses compositions weren't going anywhere I wanted to see if instead of using a solid square background breaking the shape would help. I cut a wave out of each location, one solid and one faded. I still feel they don't work so I'm just going to leave them and carry on if the others.

Week 4.

Another set of compositions here I just wanted to try out something a bit different. My favourite one is the wharf, I really like how the silhouette is a negative space, it makes it pop out more than the black. Although I do not think they are as strong as my first compositions.

Week 3.

Working on different compositions for each activity. Using a fish silhouette to cut out texture and create the scene of the activity. I feel my strongest compositions are the wharf designs, they have a really nice shape and follow through them. My weakest is the boat design, I don't feel they interesting enough, and the activity seems to get lost but I didn't want to make the boat big as I was trying to get across that your out on the sea with kms of water in and the boat is just this little thing.

Wharf

Beach

Boat

Week 3.

Using illustrator I created these markings I wanted to symbolise the busyness of each destination.

Wharf - calm and relaxing = little waves.
Beach - active but quite = medium waves
Charter - Active and busy, fast past = big waves

Incorporating theses into my designs adds an extra layer of information, I prefer the black markings as the look nice as a set of three and also the paint brush gives a nice hand made aesthetic. Also with it been one colour I can change it easily.

Week 2.

These are my first thumbnails for the charter activity. Playing around with the idea of the ocean being replaced by fish. Play on the large amount of fish at sea and the possibly of catching lots. I love the use of fish shape with the texture of the water inside.

Thumbnails - A few of the same ideas execute differently.

Week 2.

Here I have just been playing around with possible colours. The first columns was the first colours I chose, trying to attach an emotive feeling to the location. Then the second column was others colours  I preferred. This is just a rough idea of what I want the colours to be

Row 1 - Wharf, calm, lighter.
Row 2 - Beach, active, bright.
Row 3 - Charter, intense dark but still vibrant.

The two black silhouettes I was thinking about how to break up the pattern to make a more interesting shape. Maybe not into these shapes but it could be a good thing to work with.

Week 1.

In the search to find other fishing spots I joined a Wellington Fishing group on facebook, and for a Charter experience most of them recommended Pete Lamb. With the trouble of booking and waiting to hear back I cant move forward but I can draw from past fishing trips of family boat trips to get ideas. I want to play on my strengths as I am not a great drawer I love using silhouettes to create a picture.

In response to this post on facebook I got a message from another Charter company 'Black Pearl' offering a free trip in exchange for some design work. Which would have worked out great. 29th - Still haven't heard back from 'Black Pearl' which is disappointing so I will not be looking into them again and have chosen to go with Pete Lamb Charters instead.

Week 1.

Using the set matrix I choose different activities that I found interesting and put them into the table. Fishing was the first one that jumped out at me and I feel there is lots to explore with in this topic. I have done some fishing over the summer and really enjoyed it, yet I still do not know a lot and have only being fishing of the waterfront.

As I am working full time this week I don't have much time on my hands so instead of creating lots of matrix for possible brochures I wanted to keep it simple. And getting straight on to gathering ideas for my fishing brochure as this is the one I have chosen.

Week 1.

Brainstorm.

As a small group we came up as many ideas as we could for possible brochures.

The things thats interested me were activity that you can get involved in and be outside or have to be physical with as well as eco friendly attractions and activities. Doing this showed me the large variety of brochures that can be created. I want to do something that is different from everyone else, the most common thing that people were talking about is food/sweets, coffee and walks.

Week 1 - Brief

The aim is to design a brochure that promotes a set of three thematically linked recreational destinations or activities in the Greater Wellington region. The solution must balance form with function by communicating the content in a way that is engaging and easy to comprehend.
